At least 13 people perish and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
